- DIED. Virgil Thomson, 92, Pulitzer-prizewinning composer
- noted for blending native melodies into a sophisticated
- structure, as in his operas, Four Saints in Three Acts and The
- Mother of Us All; in New York City. From 1940 to 1954 he was an
- acidic and witty music critic for the New York Herald Tribune.
- "The way to write American music is simple," he once said. "All
- you have to do is be an American, and then write any kind of
- music you wish."
